Are Car Auctions preferable to Car Dealers for Buying a Car?

If you have been planning on getting a car, chances are that you have already visited a car dealer and found out what it is to visit one and the options you are offered through a dealer. There are many aspects to purchasing a car and many decisions need to be taken.

When visiting any car dealer with an interest to buy a car, you feel lot of pressure and marketing techniques employed by the dealer to sell the car. This is their duty and they need to do it to meet their targets or to make more profits. So, they will try to exert as much pressure on you as possible in an effort to sell the car to you. This might be perceived by many prospective car buyers as a disgusting phenomenon and not like it.

Car auctions give you the liberty to check out the cars before the beginning of an auction and you get to do this without anyone hounding you all the while. In fact, you will not know any details about who the actual owner of the vehicle is as you look at all the vehicles that are on for purchase. All this makes buying a car at a car auction a more pleasurable experience than trying to pick one at a dealer’s lot.

At a car auction, you look at all the cars that are available to you and once you zero in on a particular choice or choices, you can decide up to what range you will be willing to purchase the car for and bid accordingly. While at a car dealer, you will have to negotiate with the dealer to get a good price but the dealer will have the final say in the matter and usually the dealer gets the better deal. This does not hold good in a car auction where you make all the decisions and there is no one side-arming you trying to influence you in buying the car. Also, there are no follow up irritating emails or calls if you visit a car auction.

If you get to make the highest bid at the auction, you just have to convey your auction number to the staff at the auction and make the payments following which you will be given the possession of the vehicle and its documents. You need not bother about having to negotiate discounts or incentives as these are not in vogue at a car auction.

Although incentives like warranties or discounts are a great deal you can land upon at a car dealer, they are not provided to you in a car auction. After purchasing the car, you can take it to the mechanic to see if any repairs or maintenance work is required. Before purchasing, try to avoid buying cars that will need lot of repair work which can be assessed by various methods like observing for jerky movements, abnormal sounds, seeing the driver to check if he is having trouble driving the car, etc. This is a drawback to car auctions as you will not be allowed to drive the car personally or switch on the car when inspecting it to assess its condition.

If the mechanic suggests that the car still needs lot of repair work, you can take a call whether to restore the car and use it or to sell the car away. Sometimes, fixing the car and selling it will fetch a better price than trying to sell it without making the repairs. Although there are few drawbacks to buying a car at an auction, the entire process is very exciting and at the end usually you get the satisfaction of a deal gone good.
